How Much Paint Do I Need? About This Interactive Paint Coverage Calculator

Asking yourself “how much paint do I need” before heading to the paint counter is the difference between a seamless weekend project and running out of a custom-tinted color mid-wall. While a standard gallon label claims coverage of up to 400 square feet, real-world spread rates drop significantly when rolling over textured drywall, porous exterior stucco, or spraying with an HVLP turbine. Our interactive paint coverage calculator models all five architectural zones of a room or house exterior so you can calculate exact gallons, quarts, 5-gallon pails, primer volume, and total cost.

1. Precision Square Footage Calculator for Paint

Automatically computes gross wall perimeter area, ceiling area, and linear baseboard trim from your room dimensions, then deducts standard doors (21 sq ft each) and windows (15 sq ft each) so you only buy paint for true net surface area.

2. Interior & Exterior Paint Calculator Modes

Functions seamlessly as both an interior room tool and an exterior paint calculator. Switch the surface porosity dropdown to Exterior Siding (275 sq ft/gal) or Rough Stucco/Brick (185 sq ft/gal) to account for heavy weatherproofing absorption.

3. Smart 5-Gallon Bucket vs. Single-Gallon Optimizer

Buying five individual 1-gallon cans costs 12% to 20% more than ordering a contractor 5-gallon pail. Our built-in paint estimate calculator recommends the exact combination of 5-gallon buckets, 1-gallon cans, and quarts to eliminate overbuying.

How to Use This Paint Estimate Calculator (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Enter Room or Exterior House Dimensions Input your Length, Width, and Wall Height in feet inside the square footage calculator for paint panel. Use the openings dropdown to subtract doors, windows, or garage doors automatically.
Step 2: Select Surface Porosity & Application Method Choose Smooth Drywall, Textured Knockdown, Exterior Siding, or Rough Stucco. Then pick 1, 2, or 3 coats via brush/roller or sprayer (which adds a realistic 20% atomization loss buffer).
Step 3: Click the Blueprint Zones to Customize Accents, Trim & Floors Tap Zone 3 on the blueprint to split off a feature accent wall (and calculate glitter paint additive packets). Tap Zone 4 for baseboard/door trim enamel, or Zone 5 for primer and floor tile coatings.
Step 4: Review Your Optimal Can Mix & Print Your Shopping List Check the right-hand summary and bottom table to see exact liquid gallons vs. optimal cans to buy, along with DIY material cost vs. professional painter labor estimates.

Standard Paint Coverage Chart & Spread Rate Rules of Thumb

When using our square footage calculator for paint, keep these industry-standard spread rates in mind: 1 gallon of interior latex paint covers 350 to 400 square feet per coat on smooth, primed drywall, meaning a standard two-coat application covers 175 to 200 net square feet of wall per gallon. On medium-textured orange peel or knockdown walls, coverage drops to 280 to 320 square feet per gallon. When using the tool as an exterior paint calculator, expect 250 to 300 square feet per gallon on wood or fiber-cement lap siding, and 150 to 200 square feet per gallon on unpainted brick or rough stucco. For dedicated stain-blocking or PVA drywall primer, plan on 250 to 300 square feet per gallon.

Frequently Asked Questions (Paint Coverage & Estimating)

How much paint do I need for a 12×12 or 12×15 room? +
For a standard 12×12 room with 8-foot ceilings (384 gross wall sq ft, or ~333 net sq ft after deducting a door and two windows), you need 1.8 to 2.0 gallons of wall paint for two full coats. For a 12×15 room with 9-foot ceilings (~435 net wall sq ft), you will need 2.3 to 2.5 gallons (buy 2 gallons plus 2 quarts, or 3 gallons to keep touch-up paint) plus 1 gallon of flat ceiling paint and 1 to 2 quarts of semi-gloss trim enamel.
How does an exterior paint calculator estimate whole-house siding? +
An exterior paint calculator determines your home’s perimeter wall area (plus 10% to 15% for roof gables and lap siding profile depth) and divides by a lower porous-surface spread rate of 250 to 275 sq ft per gallon. For a typical 2,000 sq ft single-story home, two coats of exterior acrylic latex require roughly 12 to 15 gallons for siding and 3 to 4 gallons for eaves, fascia, and exterior trim.
Does using a paint sprayer use more paint than rolling? +
Yes. While an airless or HVLP paint sprayer applies a flawless coat in less than half the time of a roller, airborne atomization, hose priming, and overlap passes increase paint consumption by 15% to 25%. When you select the Sprayer option in our paint estimate calculator, the formula automatically adds a 20% transfer buffer so you do not run short.
Do I still need separate primer if I buy “Paint and Primer in One”? +
“Paint and Primer in One” is a high-build, high-hide finish paint that works well over clean, previously painted walls in a similar sheen. However, you still need a dedicated primer coat when painting over bare drywall, patched joint compound, raw wood trim, water/smoke stains, glossy oil-based trim, or when making a drastic dark-to-light color change.
